Way Ahead is a literature-based reading course designed for the advanced high school and college/university English language student. Used as a full-year English course textbook, this book will build the students' reading skills through guided readings and exercises. The carefully selected reading topics, along with ample writing, grammar and conversation practice, make this book an excellent choice for the teacher looking for a multi-skills textbook for the reading-focus class. Used by the student for self-study, each chapter in Way Ahead is easy to follow from section to section. The readings, discussions and vocabulary presentations are written in a non-technical and accessible style, while also providing the curious learner a path for further investigation and study.

The first reading in each chapter is followed by a discussion of selected literary devices. The student will learn how to recognize the devices and how an understanding of these devices will aid in reading comprehension. The main vocabulary section occupies the center of each chapter and prepares the student for the second reading. Several grammar points are also presented which relate to both readings.

The approach of Way Ahead is highly integrated. A central theme of the literature selection of each chapter's Reading 1 is further explored in Reading 2. Also, examples of literary devices used in the literature selections are explained and discussed. Further, all the grammar tips are supported by clear examples from the readings.

The approach is also versatile. The teacher, or the self-study student, can opt to focus on certain chapter elements while leaving out others. For example, he or she may teach only one or two grammar tips per chapter. Similarly, some devices might warrant more study time than others, depending on the nature of the course and the needs of the students. In other words, this book is useful for a variety of learning situations and can serve both the English major as well as the general English language student.

This book features:
● Fifteen chapters on a variety of topics grouped into five unit: Travel, Science & Technology, Society, Music & Art, Global Issues
● An abundance of vocabulary presented with exercises for practice, with over 700 words and expressions from the chapter readings
● CEFR levels of the words in the chapters' main vocabulary section (approximate percentages): A1-A2(28%), B1-B2(46%), C1-C2(26%)
● Two Informative and inspiring readings per chapter:
● Reading 1: a presentation and discussion of an excerpt from a literary classic
● Reading 2: an up-to-date discussion of the chapter's topic in essay format
● Fifty exercise questions per chapter divided into seven sections:
● Getting to Know Devices
● Reading 1 Comprehension
● Practice the Vocabulary (conversation practice)
● Reading 2 Comprehension
● Vocabulary and Grammar Exercises
● More Vocabulary Practice
● Grammar Practice
● Recap and Assimilation: Short answer questions, vocabulary sentence practice and two optional essay questions

CEFR correlation: B1~B2+

INTRODUCTION

Welcome to Way Ahead. As we begin our study, let us think about what our book title means. If I say, "This book will get you way ahead," I mean that studying the book will help you improve significantly as an English reader. This reading course will help you journey far ahead as a language learner.

The phrase "way ahead" has an additional meaning. When a friend shows you the way or path to a place you want to get to, he or she is showing you the way ahead. And just as all paths have a starting place, so does our reading path. Our study of the art of reading starts with the great literary classics. Since the classics provide the finest examples of English reading, we take the time to understand and appreciate selected readings from famous literature. Each chapter begins with one or more selections or excerpts from a literary master. This method of learning English reading skills is a solid way ahead for you.

I trust you will find all the classic readings in this book to be both inspirational and instructive. They are of various genres, including prose, poetry, journalism and children's literature. Moreover, each one uses particular literary and rhetorical devices, or methods of writing, which we will study in some depth. Since the reader of classic as well as of current or contemporary writings will regularly encounter these devices, it is important for you to know them.

Each chapter has two readings. Reading 1 is the literature excerpt. Reading 2 develops a theme from the first reading. For example, Reading 1 for Chapter 1 is from Jules Verne's The Mysterious Island which tells the thrilling adventure of a group of people flying in a balloon. Reading 2 continues the theme of flying. The reading is called "Plane Spotters and Flying Enthusiasts". Or consider Chapter 4 which begins with the classic reading from a poem by Emily Dickinson. This poem discusses the theme of mind exploration which is related to the theme of the second reading in the chapter: space probes sent to explore the sun. The chart below summarizes the book's connecting themes.

While the focus of this book is on reading, the book is also designed to help you develop the other English language skills of listening, speaking and writing. For example, each chapter has grammar explanations and writing exercises, related directly to the readings.

I wish you the best of success as you journey forward in the fascinating world of reading.
