A Companion to Asian American Studies is one of the first volumes
of its kind to bring an expressly cultural studies perspective to Asian
American studies. In a field long dominated by social scientific
scholarship, this Companion represents the so-called "coming of age" of
Asian American studies, with a brand of scholarship that spans the
humanities as well as the social sciences. In addition to long-standing
(and important) social scientific discussions about Asian Americans-on
immigration, model minority status, and mixed-race identity-the
Companion also embraces topics crucial to the cultural studies agenda,
including sexuality, identity politics, cyberspace, feminism, pop
culture, queerness, hybridity, and diasporic consciousness. The
anthology is comprised of 20 previously published essays that have
played an important historical role in the conceptualization of Asian
American studies as a field. Divided into three sections-Psychology,
History, and Literature and Feminism-this Companion is an indispensable
summation of an important and increasingly vibrant field of study.
