Preface
This book has been written as a text which may be used for Taiwan's required two -semester university course for English majors English Oral Training II (英語口語訓練二). It is the product of experience. When I first came to Taiwan, to National Tsing Hua University, in Fall 1985, I was assigned to teach sophomore speech and I have been teaching it every semester since then as a public speaking course.
As I point out in the Introduction, I have four objectives for the students taking this course: enhanced verbal skills, improved nonverbal skills, better organization skills, and increased argumentation skills. I don't expect my students to become brilliant public speakers; very few of us need that special ability to get through life successfully. However, the four skills I have mentioned are assets to any educated person, whether s/he is using English or any other language. The college graduate should be able to express himself/herself clearly and coherently, whether presenting a professional paper at an international conference, leading a group of foreign visitors around the workplace, or arguing for better police service in one's local community.
I decided to write my own textbook for public speaking for Taiwan's student because i found that the books available were inadequate for my students because I found that the books available were inadequate for my students. They were written for native speakers of English and just did not meet local needs. Sometimes the level of language was too high; words and phrases particular to the American context were used. Written examples of speeches looked like they were written by professional writers.
